Supervisors of Research
This section is designed to offer supervisory support and blended skill development to both experienced supervisors of student research and those new to submitting their work for research ethics review together with their students. It aims to answer the collection of questions routinely received from supervisors.
Supervisors must review the SMU REB's SOP- Completing Requests for Research Ethics Review Involving Humans. Pages 2/4 and 3/4 of the SOP itemize the submission requirements of the Board involving initial and continuing review requests. Please refer to the online version of the SOP on this website as it is updated to reflect the needs of the TCPS and the SMU research community.

Educational resources to provide to classes
Research students complete the TCPS 2 Course on Research Ethics (CORE) as part of course requirement. This online tutorial, designed by the Panel of Research Ethics, provides an applied approach to the guidance provided in TCPS 2. It is a self-paced course, media-rich learning experience that features interactive exercises and multi-disciplinary examples. CORE consists of modules ranging from Core Principles to REB Review. It is designed primarily for the use of researchers and REB members, though anyone may take this course and print their own Certificate of Completion. Work can be saved and learners can return to their modules at another time. Students and faculty should specifically identify "Saint Mary's University" as their home institution at the time of registration.
The Panel of Research Ethics shares a growing collection of its responses to written requests for interpretation of the Policy. Researchers are advised to utilize the Glossary section of the TCPS 2, 2022 to locate terms and definitions. Specifically, the definition of Information (Types) that helps gain an understanding what type of information the researcher plans on collecting from research participants as defined in this Policy. The aim is to gain skills in using a common language between research participants, REBs, researchers and the public.
Researchers who plan to work with First nations data are highly recommended to complete the The Fundamentals of OCAP® online training. This self-guided course takes learners through modules that are designed to introduce the fundamental concepts of OCAP®, information governance, and First Nations data sovereignty.
Submission for student research and their subsequent communication must come from the faculty supervisor. Requests received from students only cannot be accepted by the REB.

(Note: It is important to note that the FGSR GRHA form nor the final evaluation result/clearance is not submitted along REB requests. Meaning, this is a separate process to fgsr@smu.ca. Supervisors may submit a new request for FGSR GRHA review and a new request to the REB at ethics@smu.ca, simultaneously, as they are two separate processes.)
